February 2012
Black History Month

Communities across the country feature Major Taylor in celebrating Black History Month. For example, Lone Star College in Houston, Texas, displayed an exhibit on Major Taylor and cycling history in its North Harris campus library. At right, Joy Boone and Larry Phipps, who put together the exhibit with help from the Houston Bicycle Museum.

One of our newest affiliates, Major Taylor Austin, hosted a National Brotherhood of Cyclists summit titled "Growing the Movement," a weekend of bike rides, film and art events in Austin, Texas, promoting diversity in the sport. Above, featured guest Nelson Vails (white jersey) and others get ready to ride.

Our man Gray delivered (by bike, of course) some Major Taylor goods to the new mayor of Worcester, Mass., who promptly tweeted a photo.

A black history trivia hunt at Josiah Haynes Elementary School in Sudbury, Mass., included a Major Taylor display featuring Major Taylor artwork, apparel and books.

The Major Taylor Association offers posters
and a free downloadable curriculum guide
to black history educators.
