September 12, 1998
This celebration of natural resources and outdoor activities at Coes Pond in
Worcester, Mass., included a kids' bike rodeo and bike safety checks presented by
Seven Hills Wheelmen and the Kiwanis Club. The Major Taylor Bikeway (Mill Street)
was closed to cars and open for biking traffic-free. A vintage Iver Johnson bicycle,
similar to one that Major Taylor rode, was on display. UMass Memorial Health Care
sold bike helmets at a discount and donated the proceeds, some $800, to the Major
Taylor statue fund.
