In spring 2007, sculptor Toby Mendez completed a clay relief showing Major
Taylor taking the lead in a sprint. The 4-foot-by-8-foot panel, cast in bronze, will be mounted on one side of a granite wall, with text about Major
Taylor inscribed in the stone below it. The image is based on a rare action photo of Taylor, taken in Paris in 1903 by Jules Beau. Taylor had just
come from behind Harry Meyers of Holland and Thorwald Ellegaard of Denmark.
