The Major Taylor figure and two reliefs were sculpted in clay in 2007 at Toby Mendez Studios in Knoxville, Md. The smaller relief, 4 feet by 8 feet, depicts Taylor taking the lead in a sprint. The image is based on a rare action photo of Taylor, taken in Paris in 1903 by Jules Beau. Taylor had just come from behind Harry Meyers of Holland and Thorwald Ellegaard of Denmark.
