In August 2007, sculptor Toby Mendez completed
the standing Major Taylor
figure in clay, against a relief depicting his bicycle at a velodrome
filled with spectators. Here, Mendez positions the bicycle pedal that will
protrude from the relief. The clay sculpture then went from Mendez's studio
in Knoxville, Md., to New Arts Foundry in Baltimore, to be cast in bronze.
